How Often Should You Mow a Central Illinois Lawn?

Weekly? Every other week? The right mowing frequency changes with the season. Here's how to read your lawn instead of the calendar.

There's no single magic number for how often to mow. A healthy Central Illinois lawn might need cutting every five days in a rainy May and only every two weeks in the heat of August. The frequency follows the grass, and the grass follows the weather.

Follow the one-third rule

The most useful guideline in all of lawn care is simple: never remove more than about a third of the grass blade in a single mow. If your lawn is happiest at three inches, that means cutting it once it reaches roughly four and a half. Taking more than a third at once shocks the plant, weakens the roots, and invites weeds and disease.

Frequency by season

• Spring (peak growth): often weekly, sometimes even more in a warm, wet stretch.
• Early summer: usually weekly.
• Mid-to-late summer heat: growth slows, so every 10–14 days is common — and that's fine.
• Fall: growth picks back up with cooler temperatures, so you may return to weekly before the season winds down.

Height matters more than most people think

Cutting too short — scalping — is one of the most common mistakes we see. Short grass has shallow roots, dries out fast, and leaves bare soil where weeds move in. Keeping cool-season grass on the taller side of its range builds deeper roots and a thicker, more resilient lawn.

A few habits that keep it healthy

• Keep the blade sharp — a clean cut recovers faster than a ragged tear.
• Vary your mowing direction so the grass stands up straight and doesn't get pressed one way.
• Leave the clippings when they're short; they break down quickly and feed the lawn.
